Clarity instead of Claims
New rules. More precise language. That's actually our favorite way to talk about the EmpCo directive, which has been in effect across the EU since this year.
The EU aims to make sustainability communication more transparent and comparable. This means that general terms like "sustainable" will be subject to stricter requirements, and statements should be as specific as possible.
And we wholeheartedly welcome this!
Less big words, more clarity
Instead of using one big term for everything, we now talk about the specific properties of our products. Materials, certification, manufacturing – that's where the information that truly matters lies.
Our standards and what Tranquillo stands for haven't changed. We are simply clarifying which specific properties we mean, instead of lumping them under a single broad term. Because statements should be verifiable.
Less claim. More clarity. The products remain the same.
Why "Fair" remains
There's one word we intentionally left untouched: Fair. There's a good reason for this – we can prove it:
- GOTS: Our organic cotton is not only ecologically but also socially certified – GOTS audits working conditions along the supply chain according to ILO core labor standards.
- amfori BSCI: The production facilities of our suppliers are regularly audited according to amfori BSCI. This audit examines working hours, occupational safety, wages, and the prohibition of child labor.
- Further social standards: Depending on the product group, additional certifications include WFTO, CARE & FAIR, SA8000, or GoodWeave®.
- Our own Declaration of Commitment: We have put in writing what we focus on regarding fair working conditions along the supply chain – and we hold ourselves accountable to it.
- Long-term partnerships: We have been working with many of our manufacturers for years. This builds trust and makes it easier to genuinely monitor fair conditions rather than just claiming them.
That's the difference between a grand word and a verifiable statement. That's exactly what matters to us.
What truly matters
Most of our product range carries at least one of these independently verified certificates:
- GOTS – for our organic cotton: controlled organic farming, no harmful substances, certified social criteria.
- EcoVero™ and TENCEL™ by Lenzing – viscose and modal fibers from responsibly managed forests.
- RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) – for our wool products, including animal welfare criteria.
- GRS (Global Recycled Standard) – for products made from recycled material, such as our Sherpa fleece.
- GoodWeave® – for our handmade carpets.
- amfori BSCI, WFTO, CARE & FAIR, SA8000 – independent social audits for fair working conditions, supplemented by our own declaration of commitment.
These standards are audited by independent institutes – not by ourselves. That's precisely what makes them genuine proof instead of just a big word.
Being honest also means acknowledging shortcomings
Our ceramics range is currently not environmentally certified. We are working on it – some items, for example, already contain recycled ceramic material, and we are exploring further steps. Nevertheless, fair production is proven for these products: The production facilities are regularly audited according to amfori BSCI. Until environmental certification is in place, we consciously refrain from labeling these products as "sustainable" and instead focus on what is true: fairly produced, made with great attention to detail.
What this means for you
Over the next few weeks, you will see our revised, more precise wording in many places throughout the shop. All details about our materials and certificates can be found on our Sustainability Criteria page. And if you notice any wording that doesn't quite fit: please let us know. We take this seriously.
